And so goes the wonderful back and forth of Eric Wynalda (currently the U.S. leader in career goals, but Landycakes will take that over soon) and USMNT Coach Bruce Arena. Basically, Wynalda thinks that Brian McBride is getting a free ride from Arena and that Taylor Twellman should be playing more, A LOT more.
Personally, I think Wynalda is an idiot. In the article, Wynalda says that McBride doesn’t do much playing in the Barclay’s English Premiership and that it is easy to score in England compared to playing in the much more defense-minded French and German leagues. Ummm…have you watched the French league lately Mr. Wynalda? Seriously, defense is NOT their strong suit.

ADUnited - I’m so glad you commented on this column. A few thoughts:
(1) Eric Wynalda is great for soccer in the U.S. He is the equivalent of our Peli, Maradone, Beckenbauya or most appropriately Hugo Sanchez. The all-time great former player who feels the need to speak his mind about the current state of affairs. I hope he gets even crazier as the years go on. He should stay in the broadcast booth until he goes totally insane, then give him the reins of the U.S. National Team for the 2018 World Cup and see what happens.
(2) I was watching the Manchester Red - West London White match live Saturday, and thinking about how good Brian McBride is. He is the USA’s first World-Class Striker. Ever. He scored his 10th goal of the season - most ever for an American for an English top-flight team. But he’s so much more than scoring. He will get to any ball in the air… and pass it to a teammate. He works amazingly well coming back to the ball and laying off passes. Never makes a bad play on the ball. There aren’t 10 better center forwards in England (outside of the big 4 - West London Blue, Manchester Red, Merseyside Red and North London Red).
(3) I think this FCCamena.com should come up with some artwork showing the Eric Wynalda - Taylor Twellman love affair… complete with hearts and flowers… would be perfect for the upcoming holiday. Art Department?

I caught the Man Red - WLW match on Saturday as well, before I had a whiff of this column, and I felt a genuine sense of pride watching McBride out there. He was banging with the big boys, making smart plays on and off the ball, and generally doing almost all the things that you’d want him to do as a player.
Wynalda is crazy. Completely off his rocker. I just don’t see Twellman scoring against Man Red in that game. I see Twellman getting run over by Man Red.
Also, I can’t get enough of the Bruce Arena quotes in re: “I don’t know how they think.” Brilliant. Just brilliant.
