All right, finally some corporate synergy I can get behind. Take a deep breath: Yahoo!, official online partner of the FIFA Wolrd Cup, is going to use recent acquisition flickr to post fan photos throughout the World Cup. Essentially, it looks like they’ll share all the photos that have tags like FIFA2006, Germany 2006, etc., right through the main World Cup site. I mean, Flickr was going to have some fabulous photo pools from the World Cup anyway, but it’s pretty cool that they’re bringing that community right to the World Cup site.

England Football Team songs are always a speculative punt of the ball. Too emotional and weedy like Baddiel and Skinner’s “Three Lions” and you end up only singing it at closing time crying with your girlfriend after Graham Seaman has just let in a corker. Too clever like “(How Does it Feel to Be) On Top of the World - England United” by the Spice Girls, Lightning Seeds and, yes, Echo and the Bunnymen and you lose interest before you’ve even finished reading the title of the song. Get it right though and your place is assured in history. So far there has been nothing better than New Order’s “World in Motion” which was sung from the terraces in 1990 and is considered by pundits, as well as yours truly, as the best song ever.
Of course, I suppose the best test of a footie song is whether it will lead the boys to the Cup. As far as I know there was no catchy tune in 1966 so we can’t say for sure. But just when you’re about to give up on 2006 with its lacklustre ditties along comes “England (Win With Ease)” by Fry & Wilson with music by The Shaman and knocks you into the back of the net.
Enjoy folks.
