Let’s send a big shout-out to the boys from Trinidad and Tobago for a hard-fought and well-deserved draw against Sweden today. Playing a man down for the entire second half against some extremely expensive attacking players (who knows how much Ibrahimovic will cost when Juve holds their we’re-going-to-Serie-C firesale later this summer), CONCACAF’s fourth-best squad earned a point. Good for them, especially Old Men Shaka Hislop (who was completely unflappable in goal) and Dwight Yorke — who played, um, defensive midfielder? Hopefully this isn’t the last surprise the longest shots in the tournament can pull.
In other news, England and Paraguay made me glad I watched the game on DVR delay, and Argentina looked really really good. I mean, really good. Tough defending, creativity in attack, poise all over the field — yikes, look like these guys have their act together. And we didn’t even see Messi or Tevez. Uh oh. These guys might be good.
