Led by former US MNTer Eric Wynalda, and including former US MNTer Marcelo Balboa, the ESPN crew is absolutely hammering Arena, and calling for his head (or for him to at least step aside) in the wake of the current US MNT’s disappointing World Cup finish.
For his part, in his post-game press conference Arena did his best to pawn off responsibility to the ref for calling the penalty and to FIFA for the draw that the US ended up with (both of which certainly did impact the team’s ultimate result - I am still pissed that we ended up in this group and Mexico had a relatively soft group).

I concur with the sense of frustration about Mexico. They look no better than us, but advanced by squeaking past inept Iran with goals right at the end, playing a horribly dull goalless draw against Angola, and losing to a Portugal side at half strength. They will get creamed by Argentina.

Couple of other thoughts.
1. While I think it’s time for a change at the top (especially if we can get a top foreign coach like Klinnsman), I also don’t think we are as bad as Wynalda et al are making it out to be. We got jobbed by a couple of truly horrible calls in two games that truly affected our tactics. Maybe I’m naive or stupid, but 1-1 vs Ghana is totally different than 2-1. I should also note that an Italian team with a man advantage couldn’t score on us in 43 minutes. It shouldn’t be too surprising that we couldn’t score against a bunkering Ghanan side.
2. Some of our poor form has to go on the players. Donovan was invisible against Ghana for the most part. Mastro’s red was moronic, Boca’s play was moronic. The only guy I’d say had a good WC was Dempsey with Gooch having an OK WC. That’s unexceptable.
3. Bloody the young guys…NOW. Argentina off their horrid 2002 WC have only 4 holdovers. We should approach 2010 the same way. If we are still looking at guys like Cher, O’Brien, Boca, etc. in 2010 someone should be shot since we won’t win a WC with them. That should always be the goal.
4. Get the USSF to tell these MLS teams to get these 18-24 year guys on the field. I like the league and all, but our younger guys need to play on a regular basis. When guys like Marvell Wynne aren’t getting 90 minutes on a regular basis b/c the coach goes with a 3-5-2, something is wrong with the entire US development system. I know results matter in MLS, but lets face facts, unless you’re a true MLS diehard, the only results that matter right now are every four years. The entire US soccer structure should be aligned that way for the time being.

The view from the blue section (among the lovely Ghana supporters — much less blood and spitting than the Italians) was that we didn’t deserve to go through.
We didn’t get a very good look at the penal, but it didn’t look convincing. All that said, we lost because we once again had no idea how to score a goal. Lob after lob after lob. McBride worked hard, sure, but he didn’t look that effective.
Landycakes. YUCK. Shoot. The. Ball.
DMB had a better game, and Dempsey was good for us. Eddie Johnson’s touch looked horrific.
Also, why is no one killing Reyna for coughing up that ball on the first goal?
The party wasn’t as good after this one. (Obviously.)

What is all this foolish talk about Mexico? Sounds like sour grapes to me. Please stop winging…this is the World Cup. The WORLD Cup, get it? And by the way, Arg-Mex just finished and was one of the bext games of the tournament. Argentina won by an own goal and a wonder strike in extra time. So please leave your border issues at home at applaud a team who gave it their all. I will definitely be posting something this.

Mexico had no clue what to do in the second half & overtime. Zinha was the only player making things happen. Where was Omar Bravo?
I would call Mexico’s effort “gutsy” but I’m really tired of seeing Rafa Marquez take cheap shots in WC Round of 16 matches. His yellow card foul against Crespo was completely classless.
That being said, I’m also not a subscriber to the USA-should-have-been-seeded-against-Mexico argument. Do you think the Netherlands or Portugal might also have a legitimate claim to be seeded? (Or even the Czechs…)

Well, I’m tempted to post a snotty response, but this is a friendly blog. Mexico played a great game today, absolutely. But the “sour grapes” stems from the Mexican attitude that they always have been and always will be our superiors in soccer. I grew up 50 miles from the border and while I like the Mexicans I grew up playing with and against just fine, this particular attitude is annoying and pervasive, and not true. I applaud their effort today, but in my opinion they were extremely fortunate to get a seed and a great draw and thus be able to advance while playing lousy. Now I’m going to have to hear about the US crashing out of the group stage while Mexico “outplayed” Argentina for the next four years.
As for Argentina winning with an “own goal and a wonder strike,” the fact is that they held possession the whole game, were robbed of the winning goal in regulation when Tevez was wrongfully flagged for offside, and still beat Mexico despite playing their worst. If Riquelme and Saviola would’ve bothered to wake up before putting on their uniforms it would’ve been a different game altogether.
In other news, Argentina needs to find a way to get Messi in the game earlier than the 70th minute. He has looked like the most dangerous player on the pitch every time he’s played. He deserved the goal in regulation, and should’ve scored in overtime when he overly unselfishly tried to lay the ball to Tevez rather than turning and finishing.

And as you so eloquently and helpfully pointed out ealier, since this tournament is called the “World Cup” it is really out of line for anyone to offer any critique on any team in the world.
